Dubliner Graham Dale, an IT specialist living in Texas, was working as a volunteer with a fire department when he heard that an airplane had hit the World Trade Centre in New York. As the tragic events unfolded before his eyes, he suddenly realised that he could no longer remain a spectator in the face of this appalling atrocity. There and then he made a decision that was to affect the rest of his life; he drove to the nearest Military Recruitment Centre and enlisted in the US Marines.

After surviving months of ‘constant mental and physical torture’ in the notoriously tough ‘Marine Boot Camp’ in San Diego, he joined the ranks of one of the most elite branches of the United States military and two years later found himself patrolling the dangerous wastes of the western desert in war-torn Iraq.

Throughout his deployment in Iraq, Dale kept a daily journal to give us an astonishing, true account of one man’s fight in the frontline of America’s ‘War on Terror’. Told with brutal honesty, he gives us a unique and rare insight from an Irishman, fighting for a foreign military in a very foreign land.

I found Gra's depiction of his experiences in Iraq to be very similar to my experience as a Seabee in 65-67, when I did two tours in Vietnam with MCB-9. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a realistic look at life in "theatre".

There are as many similarities between our experiences as there are differences. My first tour on China Beach (we built the hospital [twice] that they based the TV Program on) was "active" and I had the opportunity to fire back. Second tour was to quiet for me and drove me nuts waiting for the shoe to drop. When I got home in 67 no one greeted us and some scorned us, so many went underground. PTSD was not accepted, but it was real. To cut this short, I came home with unrecognized PTSD which didn't clearly expose itself until I retired and stopped overworking. My family recognized something was wrong and I sought and got treatment. Am managing with the help of many people including family, group at the Veterans Center and the great group of people with Team RWB., and of course reading good books! 😎

The Green Marine An Irishman War in Iraq eBook Graham Dale Neil Fetherstonhaugh Reviews

Great book! Graham did a great job of telling the story as if we were sitting at the pub sharing a pint. The whole time I was reading the book, I could hear Graham saying the words. He gives you a very real view of what it was like in boot camp and as well as what it is like in Iraq. Plus he was able to add in some of his own humor.
I highly recommend this book! Great job Graham.
I met Graham back in 2000. He was a genuine story teller then and I truly appreciate him sharing his tales now.
I expected this book to either glorify or demonize the war in Iraq. It did both, and neither. It isn't a political book justifying the American presence there, and it doesn't cry for the withdrawal of troops. It just tells the story of what it's like over there from one marine's perspective. The writing was compelling and well done. If you want to find out what it was like in Iraq, then I highly recommend this book. The Green Marine is a solid piece of work and Graham Dale really hit home with it.
Great book. Very unpolished and real, as it was the author's first hand account of what he experienced. Graham is a good friend of mine; great guy. Glad I was able to read about his experiences.

Great book.
As a former Marines and combat veteran, Graham Dale's account of his combat experience in Iraq is spot on! Packed with colloqialisms derived from his native town of Dublin, Ireland as well as those used by the United States Marines. The Green Marine reads as if you were being told the story first hand by Mr.Dale over a pint at a local pub. It is a must read.
Good book, thoroughly enjoyed it, fascinating to read the story of a fellow Dubs experiences in such a monumental and life changing event. Told as if he's telling it to you personally over a few pints! Got the kindle edition, not sure if there's accompanying photos in the print version but there's not in the ebook
